Astros pounce on Birds

Staff reports
Bluefield Daily Telegraph

BLUEFIELD — Ebert Rosario’s three-run home run in the first inning proved to be plenty of runs for Greeneville, as the Astros defeated the Bluefield Orioles 10-0 on Friday night at Pioneer Park.

Greeneville (16-15), which is 9-2 in its last 11 games, received three hits from Albert Cartwright and Federico Hernandez, while Kyle Greenwalt surrendered just two hits in six innings on the mound in front of 2,040 fans.

Bluefield (11-19), which committed five errors, started the third inning with singles by Levi Carolus and Buck Britton. Lance West added a pinch-hit single in the eighth, and Britton collected his second hit of the game in the ninth.

The Orioles stranded just one runner after the Astros turned three double plays.

Rosario’s second home run of the season followed a Cartwright single and a walk to Kody Hinze in the first by starter Tyler Sexton (1-3).

Frank Almonte added an RBI double in the third to give the Astros a 4-0 lead. Greeneville, which out-hit the Orioles 13-4, collected two runs in the sixth and four in the seventh, taking advantage of six doubles.

Rosario added a run-scoring double to finish with four RBIs, while four different Astros scored two runs apiece. Greenwalt (4-1) surrendered just two hits and struck out three in six innings for the Astros. Zachary Grimmett went a pair of frames, allowing one hit and striking out one. Italian hurler Andrea Lucati finished up for Greeneville. None of the three walked a batter.

Tyler Sexton allowed 10 hits and six runs — four earned — in six innings of work for the Orioles. Conrad Orman surrendered four runs — three earned — and three hits in the seventh. Thomas Phelps pitched a scoreless eighth.

Bluefield, which is 3-11 away from Bowen Field, will play Greeneville again tonight at 7 p.m. The Orioles return home for a pair of three-game series with the Burlington Royals and Danville Braves.

The first pitch of Sunday’s game with Burlington is slated for 5 p.m.
