Barnett earns save in VHSCA All-Star Game

Staff reports

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Jordan Barnett, a recently-graduated star pitcher from Richlands, recorded the final outs to earn the save for the West baseball team during the Virginia High School Coaches Association All-Star Game on Thursday in Newport News.

The West defeated the East 7-6 at Christopher Newport University.

Honaker’s Logan Ball also participated for the West, lining out to the shortstop in his one at-bat.

Barnett, who struck out six while allowing three hits and one run after entering in the seventh inning, will continue his playing career at Limestone College in South Carolina, while Ball has no plans to play at the next level.

•In softball, Tazewell’s Tiffany Harris scored the lone run for the West in a 6-1 loss to the East in the VHSCA All-Star Game, also played at Christopher Newport on Thursday.

Harris and Richlands’ two-sport star Jenny Keene represented Southwest Virginia.

Harris, who will next play at Walters State Community College, was 0-for-2 at the plate, but pinch-ran, stole second and scored for the West. Keene, who won’t continue her playing career in softball or basketball, was hitless in two plate appearances.

•In boys basketball, Twin Valley head coach Brian Moore served as an assistant for the West squad, which upset the East 92-90. The East had won 16 of the last 17 games in the series.

George Wythe’s Tennis Simon, who will next play at Bluefield College, contributed 12 points in the win at the Hampton Coliseum.

•Paige Shifflett, another Richlands product, played for the West in the volleyball game Wednesday that was won in four games by the East at Christopher Newport.

Shifflett will attend Concord University and play for the Lady Lions.

•The VHSCA football game was completed late Friday at Hampton’s Darling Stadium. Among the local products scheduled to play for the West were Richlands’ Austin Fuller and Shane Wicks and Billy Cook of Giles.

Richlands’ head coach Greg Mance served as an assistant coach.

•Graham’s Beth Mercke was listed as a participant for the West in the girls all-star soccer game that was played Wednesday.
