Falcons sweep SWD track

ABINGDON, Va. — Southwest District newcomers Abingdon and Marion finished 1-2 during the SWD track meet held Wednesday at Abingdon High School.

The Abingdon girls tallied 199 points to 136 for Marion. Graham finished third with 79. In the boys competition, Abingdon (214) easily out-pointed Marion (98) and Carroll County (81).

The top six individuals and top three relay teams in each event advances to the Region IV Track Meet slated for May 24.

Graham sophomore Chelsea Gallinger won the long jump, while the G-Girls combined to win the 4x400 and 4x800 relay. Lauren Bennett of Tazewell won the shot put competition.

Marion’s Shawnee Carnett won the 200, 400 and 800 meter runs, while Abingdon’s Morgan Grant captured the 100 and 300 meter hurdles.

In the boys event, Tazewell’s Justin Burton captured the shot put, the only athlete not from the top three teams to finish in first place.

Carroll County’s Matt Coble won the 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs, while Abingdon’s Isiah Phillips finished on top in the 200 meter dash and high jump. The Falcons’ Braden Coleman took first in the long jump and triple jump.
