Bluefield adds two recruits

Staff, wire reports
Bluefield Daily Telegraph

BLUEFIELD, Va. — The first recruit for new Bluefield College women’s soccer coach Joe Wehrle is a name already known to BC soccer fans. Helen Roundy, sister of current men’s soccer player D.J. Roundy, has been signed for the upcoming season.

The Lady Rams new mentor has been hot on the recruiting trail virtually since he first set foot on the campus a few weeks ago.

“It was a first for me as a coach, so it will be one that I remember,” Wehrle said. “Plus it took place right after they won a hard fought 3-2 game with a rival. It wasn’t very formal, as she signed right on the hood of my rental car.

“Her parents and friends were there and her mom was the photographer.”

Wehrle said, “Helen is primarily an outside midfielder but can play central mid and up top as a forward. She will bring knowledge and experience to the program as she has played on some very competitive club teams.

“She is also a hard worker, both in the classroom and on the field.”

Roundy is a product of Glou-cester (Va.) High School and her team currently stands undefeated in district play with two games remaining.

In a signing ceremony on Saturday, the Lady Rams softball program added Amber McDonald, a team captain at Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley. McDonald plays pitcher and most infield positions.

“She has a great drop ball and will make an immediate impact for us in many different areas,” said head softball coach Lauren Shepard. “Amber should fit right in and really complement our other two pitchers.”

McDonald said, “As soon as I showed up (on campus), I knew this was where I really belonged. ... The coaches, faculty, and staff all made me feel really welcome, like I was already a part of the team and the school.”

A softball player since age 5, she said, “I consider myself a utility player because I can play pretty much any position and I’ve been playing (softball) for a long time.”

“I enjoy playing defense the most, especially first base because I can get a really good stretch on the ball.”
