Ray pitches Mavericks to sectional title

Staff report
Bluefield Daily Telegraph

HINTON — The ace of the James Monroe High School pitching staff, Logan Ray, pitched a no-hitter until the fifth and final inning and batted 3-for-4 on Saturday afternoon as the Mavericks claimed the Class AA, Region III, Section 2 championship, defeating PikeView 11-1 at Summers County High School.

The deciding game had been delayed by weather earlier in the week.

Ray struck out eight PikeView batters. Pinch hitter Ryan Farmer broke up Ray’s no-hitter with a single in the bottom of the fifth, and the Panthers finished with two hits.

At bat, Ray drove in two runs and scored once. Josh White also batted 3-for-4, and Ernie Tincher and Heath Archie were 2-for-3 at the plate. Archie and Brian Belcher provided the game’s only extra base hits, each recording a double. The Mavs had 13 hits in all.

The game was tied 1-1 after the first inning. The Mavericks added three runs in the second and six in the third.

Bo Garrett started on the mound for PikeView and pitched two innings before a pair of relievers, Josh Easter and Matt Evans, handled the third inning. The Panthers committed three errors.

James Monroe will take on the winner of the sectional championship between Oak Hill and Independence on Monday, May 19, in a regional semifinal at Independence High in Raleigh County. The regional championship is set for May 21 at Bluefield.
