Beavers extend sectionals

WELCH — Warren Furrow made sure Bluefield would live to play another day.

The senior collected a double, three singles and drove in five runs, leading Bluefield to an 11-2 Region III, Section 4 Tournament win over Mount View on Thursday night at Nick Shaffron Field.

Bluefield (10-12) and Mount View (10-14) will meet tonight at 6 p.m., with the winner claiming the sectional title.

Nick Williams and Chase Joyner added two hits apiece for the Beavers, while Jonathon Lyons and Furrow combined to allow just six hits.

Mount View, which committed four errors, was paced by C.J. Wiseman and Jeremy Hayes with two hits apiece.

Richlands 9, Abingdon 2

WARDELL, Va. —Jordan Barnett allowed three hits, as Richlands improved to 17-0 with a Southwest District win over the Falcons.

Taylor Sizemore led the Blue Tornado (17-0, 10-0) with a double, single, RBI and two runs scored. Bradley Strong also had two hits, an RBI and scored twice.

Nathan Hagy led Abingdon with two hits and a run scored.

Richlands will travel three times next week, starting at Grayson County on Monday. Grundy (Tuesday) and Tazewell (Friday) will follow.

Prep Track

CHARLESTON—Princeton senior T.J. Benners qualified for Class AAA state competition in the 100 and 200 meters during the Region 3 Meet held Wednedsay night at Laidley Field.

Benners placed third in both events, with Princeton finishing with 41 points, which was sixth out of eight teams. Princeton’s 4x400 relay team and shot putter Matt Maddow finished second to also qualified for the state meet slated for May 16-17 at Laidley Field.

Bryan Staten will also travel to Charleston after finishing third in the discus.
