Justus prevails as Hurley tops Cobras for first BDD win

By LLOYD COMBS
Bluefield Daily Telegraph

COUNCIL, Va. — Clint Justus drove in the go-ahead run and Willie Burks drove in what turned out to be a key insurance run in the sixth as Hurley edged Council, 7-6, in Black Diamond District baseball Thursday evening.

Justin Vandyke tossed a six-hitter and struck out nine, including two in the seventh, when the Cobras left the potential game-tying run on second base. It was the first BDD win of the season for the Rebels (5-9-2, 1-7).

Burks, Vandyke and Jordan Prater each had two hits for Hurley. The Rebels got hits from seven different batters and took advantage of five Council errors.

Shane Presley had two hits for Council (3-12, 2-5). Shannon Breeding singled, stole second base, and scored on an RBI single by Presley to get the Cobas within 7-6 before Vandyke retired the final two batters in the seventh.

Kegan Bostic struck out 12 while taking the loss, and drove in two runs without a hit for Council.
