Grundy topples Council 24-14

By LLOYD COMBS
Bluefield Daily Telegraph

GRUNDY, Va. — Grundy scored 15 unanswered runs in its final two at-bats and finished off Council, 24-14, in six innings in non-district baseball action Saturday evening.

The Golden Wave trailed 14-9 going into the bottom half of the fifth when Cody Cantrell’s two-run single keyed a 5-run rally that knotted the game at 14-14.

In the sixth, Grundy took its first lead of the game on an RBI single by freshman Jon Kelly and got four straight RBI hits, including a double off the bat of Cody Billiter, who got the win in relief.

Billiter cleared the bases and ended the contest under the 10-run rule with a single to left and Council’s ninth error of the game.

Cantrell had three hits and drove in four runs, Michael Endicott had three hits, while three Grundy hitters, Billiter (2-4), Jeremy O’Quinn (3-5) and Cody Justus reached base five ties apiece and John Hagy (2-5, 4 runs, 3 RBIs) got on base six times.

Kegan Bostic (2-3, 2B, 5 RBIs) Ethan Ball (3-4, 3 RBIs), Charlie Rasnake (2-4, 3 RBIs), Corey Barton (2-3, 3 runs) and Matt Boyd (2-3, 3 runs) all had big games at the plate for Council, which also blew leads of 4-0 and 9-5.

Grundy plays at Southwest District rival Richlands on Monday, while Council hosts Twin Valley in Black Diamond District play on Tuesday.
