Twin Valley sweeps past Haysi in BDD twinbill

By LLOYD COMBS
Bluefield Daily Telegraph

PILGRIM’S KNOB, Va. — Everyone else was rolling threes. Sydney Gilbert rolled a seven.

Gilbert hit seven straight 3-pointers and led Twin Valley to a 71-58 win over Black Diamond District rival Haysi Friday night.

The Lady Panthers were 14-of- 29 from 3-point range and Gilbert had half of those. The diminutive senior guard missed her first long-range shot and her last.

In between she knocked seven in a row, six in the first half, when Twin Valley rallied from a 14-3 first-quarter deficit to take a 31-24 lead midway through the second period.

“It looked bad for us early,” Twin Valley coach. “Then Sydney got hot and when we were hitting shots we were able to press. Our press got us back in it in the first half and our shooters kept hitting in the second half.”

Threes by Gilbert and Sarah Mullins and two buckets inside by Katie Jo Lester staked Twin Valley (7-4, 1-1) to a 49-39 lead by the 2:24 mark of the third quarter.

Gilbert finished with 25 points, while Mullins got all of her 12 points from behind the 3-point arc. Lester added 24 points, 10 rebounds, six assists and three steals.

After a hot start Haysi (6-4, 1-1) never found the range again from the perimeter, but clawed its way back into the game behind the inside play of Mishala O’Quinn, and the all-around floor play of Jazmine Counts.

“Mishala had an awesome game,” Haysi coach Jessica Owens said. “She dominated inside. I wish we had got her the ball more.

“She went up strong, and she had seven offensive rebounds. That’s what got us back in the game.”

O’Quinn finished with a double-double with 20 points and 10 boards. Counts contributed 18 points, eight rebounds and four steals.
