All four East River Mountain Tunnel lanes open
Traffic on I-77 is still backed up about 14 miles in Bland County, Va., but the Virginia Department of Transportation is reporting that both northbound lanes of I-77 through East River Mountain are now open to traffic.
A heart for service
In the film noir gangster movies, guys who did the kind of work that Randolph “Randy” Phillips did would be called, “Screw,” a name for a prison guard that comes from the shackles that bound prisoners more than a century ago. But during 32 years of service with the Virginia Department of Corrections, Phillips, now 63, and retired, worked to help the inmates under his supervision work to straighten their lives out and become productive citizens.
One lane of northbound I-77 through East River Mountain tunnel open
The right lane through the East River Mountain tunnel on Interstate 77 is open, but traffic through the tunnel is moving slow. By midday, the traffic was backed up about 11 miles from the south entrance to the tunnel, according to the Virginia State Police.
