Bluefield man at large; Suspect charged with death of infant son

BLUEFIELD — A Bluefield man charged with first-degree murder in connection with his infant son’s death is now at large, according to Bluefield Police Department Detective K.L. Adams.

Cassidy Byrd, 23, of Bluefield, is charged in connection with the death of his infant son Ethan Byrd, Adams said. The infant died on April 5.

“We did not rule it as a homicide at first, but the medical examiner has confirmed that the infant was beaten to death. The baby had a fractured skull, fractured legs, fractured collarbone and multiple bruises,” Adams said.

“In the early morning hours of April 5, we received a call from Bluefield Regional Medical Center that they had an infant that was picked up that was deceased upon arrival,” Adams said. “The medical examiner was there along with the parents. The parents stated that the infant had awoken the father gasping for breath, having trouble breathing, and upon the arrival of the EMS, it had stopped breathing. By the time the baby had reached the hospital, he had passed away.”

The mother of the child, Ashley Owens, is serving two years unsupervised probation for a previous incident with a 6-week-old infant that was removed from her custody after a 2011 incident in McDowell County.

Police have obtained a warrant for Byrd and are actively searching for him.

“I would definitely take any tips on his location,” Adams said. “Call the Bluefield Police station at 327-6101.”
