PRINCETON, W.Va. (AP) — West Virginia transportation officials say traffic on southbound Interstate 77 at the West-Virginia Virginia line is flowing again after a tractor-trailer accident was cleared in Virginia.
The Virginia Department of Transportation oversees the Big Walker and East River Mountain tunnels along I-77. Due to accidents and slick road surfaces from a winter storm, VDOT closed the tunnels Thursday night.
West Virginia Department of Transportation spokesman Brent Walker says officials didn't want cars and trucks at a standstill inside the tunnels, and the decision was made in West Virginia to reroute southbound traffic off the interstate at Princeton.
The northbound section of the interstate had been shut down in Virginia due to accidents before being reopened along with both directions of the tunnels Friday morning.
