Anonymous $3,000 donation helps Community Christmas Tree meet 2012 goal

Bluefield Daily Telegraph

BLUEFIELD —  — An anonymous $3,000 donation Wednesday helped to push the 2012 Community Christmas Tree campaign over the top thus ensuring a bright Christmas for more than 800 youngsters in our region who would otherwise go without.

Tuesday’s contributions of $4,270 brings this year’s total to date to $30,273. The campaign goal was $30,000. A donation Tuesday of $3,000 from a “anonymous” reader of the Daily Telegraph helped to put the campaign over the top.

Organizers of the Community Christmas Tree now anticipate serving more than 825 children next week.

“We are so appreciative of the continued generosity of our loyal readers,” Daily Telegraph      Editor and Community Christmas Tree Coordinator Samantha Perry said. “Thanks to the overwhelming kindness of so many near and far, we are confident that we will once again be able to ensure a merry Christmas for more than 800 children in our region.”

Last year 755 children were served by the Community Christmas Tree. Perry said the increased number of children being helped this year is an indicator of the great need in the region.

The stage is now set for next week’s Little Jimmie party. Sponsored by the Bluefield Daily Telegraph since 1917, the Little Jimmie program provides a gift bag filled with two toys — selected especially for each individual child — food, treats, a book, toboggan, a pair of gloves and other goodies.

This year’s party will be Friday, Dec. 21, from noon to 1:30 p.m. at the city auditorium on Stadium Drive in Bluefield.

In anticipation of the big day, a team of volunteer shoppers will be purchasing hundreds of toys this week at the Bluefield Kmart, which will be distributed next week in the vintage red bags that have come to symbolize the Little Jimmie party over the decades.

Those who would still like to contribute to the Community Christmas Tree program can mail donations to: Bluefield Daily Telegraph, c/o Community Christmas Tree, P.O. Box 1599, Bluefield, WV, 24701; or drop them off at the Daily Telegraph office. Checks should be made payable to the Community Christmas Tree Fund.
