Prerogative Pet Drive needs your help to supply shelters

BLUEFIELD — Residents across the two Virginias have a chance to make the holidays happy for animals in need throughout the region with the beginning of the Fifth annual Prerogative Pet Drive.

Sponsored by Prerogative magazine, the pet drive will last from Dec. 10 through Dec. 14 allowing community members to donate toys, treats, food, cleaning supplies, blankets and towels to aid animal shelters across the region. Donations can be dropped off for the pet drive at the Bluefield Daily Telegraph or Princeton Times offices.

The shelter drive benefits five organizations in the two Virginias including the Mercer County Animal Shelter, McDowell County Humane Society, Tazewell County Animal Shelter, Pet Haven Rescue Center in Falls Mills, Va., and the Save-A-Pet Food Bank in Bluefield.

Donna Murphy, with the Tazewell County Animal Shelter in North Tazewell, Va., said donations from the community make life easier for animals that are waiting to be adopted.

“Year-round we appreciate any donations,” Murphy said. “This time of year people don’t have a lot of money and cannot take in extra animals because of their own need, which adds an extra burden to the shelters. Animals are coming in at a large volume, and we want to take care of them as best we can. Any and all help from the public is appreciated. We want to make these little animals as comfortable as possible. The blankets and toys people give make a world of difference in making these animals happy. Anything the public can do we and the animals appreciate so much.”

The pet drive is also made possible through volunteers like Charlie Cole of Cole Harley-Davidson who provides transportation for all items collected. Employees and volunteers from local shelters as well as Daily Telegraph and Prerogative staff volunteer their time to help unload these donations.
