Bluefield man sentenced to 20 years for robbery

PRINCETON — A man who was indicted in February 2012 for first-degree murder in the death of a Bluefield man was sentenced Monday on a lesser charge of robbery.

Michael Greene aka “Smoke,” 20, is currently incarcerated at the Southern Regional Jail in Beaver. Greene appeared for sentencing before Mercer County Circuit Judge William Sadler.

Greene was indicted in 2012 in connection with the Jan. 9, 2010 shooting death of Clayton Dewey Mitchem, 45, of Bluefield. The incident occurred at the Economy Inn off Cumberland Road in Bluefield. Greene’s case was transferred from juvenile to adult status.

At the time of the shooting, Bluefield police described the murder as “narcotics related.”

The transaction leading up to the shooting involved a deal to exchange drugs for a firearm, Prosecuting Attorney Scott Ash said Monday.

The Mercer County Grand Jury indicted Greene in February 2012 on a charge of first-degree murder. However, the charge was later reduced in a plea agreement to robbery.

“It was not a strong case,” Ash said of the murder charge.

Judge Sadler sentenced Greene to a term of 20 years. He will be eligible for parole in five years, Ash stated.
