PRINCETON — More than 20 Mercer County residents have submitted applications for a vacant seat on the Mercer County Commission.

The county commission announced Oct. 8 that applications would be accepted from people who wished to complete the term of the late Commissioner Joe Coburn, who passed away Oct. 3. Coburn’s term continues until Dec. 31, 2014.

The deadline for submitting applications was Friday. County Coordinator Vicky Reed said 22 people had applied for the Third District county commission seat.

County Commission President Mike Vinciguerra said Friday that he and Commissioner Gene Buckner had not yet looked at the applications. A decision must be made by Nov. 3.

“We’ll probably make it before the end of next week because we have to get it done by the third,” Vinciguerra said.

By West Virginia State Code, the person serving the rest of Coburn’s term must be, like Coburn, a Democrat and reside in the Third District. The Third District includes Athens, Matoaka, Lashmeet, Spanishburg, part of Montcalm, and other outlying communities.

Buckner said the county commission had not yet opened all of the resumes that arrived at the Mercer County Courthouse. The selection would be discussed Oct. 22, and a decision should be made by the end of the week.
