WAR — A female inmate at the Southwest Regional Jail in Logan was arrested Wednesday evening on a first degree murder charge stemming from the death of her husband last year.

Chayna Eskins, 20, of War was incarcerated at Southwest Regional on an unrelated charge of possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance when trooper J.R. Coburn of the Welch Detachment of the West Virginia State Police executed a warrant arresting her for the murder of her husband, Samuel Lee Saunders, 23, on Dec. 15, 2012.

“We investigated the case initially as a drug overdose,” Coburn said. “When we received the report back from the medical examiner that Mr. Saun-ders died as a result of a lethal dose of opiates. We investigated the case, determined that his wife delivered the lethal dose to her husband and obtained the arrest warrant.”

In addition to the first degree murder charge, Coburn said he charged Eskins with delivery of a controlled substance. Saunders was 23 years old at the time of his death.
