Plans still moving forward for new city hall building in Princeton

PRINCETON — The former First Community Bank building on Mercer Street will still house the new city hall offices for Princeton and New River Community and Technical College.

City employees are in the new city hall building removing old wires and doing some demolition, prepping the building for renovations, City Manager Elke Doom said.

A building commission meeting is planned for Thursday, Oct. 17 to determine whether to keep the low bidder, Swope Construction of Bluefield, or completely re-bid again, Doom said.

The commission also will decide whether to keep working on the building at a fast pace to get the structure ready or if they will slow down construction, Doom said.

Doom said the plan is for the old banking building to still house both a city hall and a new downtown campus for New River Community and Technical College.

Doom said the lease has not been signed, but the lease agreements are still the same. It would be a five-year lease with two one-year renewal options. Long-term plans for the college have not yet been determined.

Libby Belcher, a spokesperson for New River Community and Technical College, said plans for the proposed move have not changed.
