WELCH — A McDowell County man has been arrested on 20 counts of possession of child pornography, police said Monday.

Troopers with the West Virginia State Police Internet Crimes Against Children unit conducted a search warrant on the residence of Brad Aliff, 33, of the Carwell Hollow area of Kimball Friday, according to Sgt. A.P. Christian of the West Virginia State Police Welch Detachment. Christian said evidence recovered from the residence led to the arrest of Aliff on 20 counts of possession of child pornography.

Aliff was arraigned on the charges before Magistrate Danny Mitchell, who set bond in the case at $50,000.

Christian said each count of possession of child pornography carries a maximum fine of $10,000 and 10 years in prison if convicted on the charges.

Christian said photographs of minors involved in sexually explicit conduct were recovered from the residence as a result of the search warrant.

“I can’t say a whole lot,” Christian said of the investigation. “The Internet Crimes Against Children Unit had been monitoring activity in the Carwell Hollow area as far as downloading child pornography on the Internet. This led to the arrest of Mr. Aliff.”

Christian said several items of evidence were recovered from the residence and retained by the West Virginia State Police as a result of the search warrant.

The investigation continues. Christian said Aliff also could potentially face federal charges.

Aliff was arrested by Trooper J.C. Mann, also of the West Virginia State Police Welch detachment.
