Demolition of historic Princeton structure begins

PRINCETON — A historic house in Princeton is coming down.

The Judge Johnston House on West Main Street in Princeton is to be demolished. City Manager Elke Doom said she visited the site today and said some woodwork out of the home is being removed.

“It is coming down,” Doom said. “The demolition permit was pulled today.”

Parts of the home’s woodwork are being salvaged.

“They are saving as much of it as they can,” Doom said.

The Mercer County Historical Society filed an injunction in January to prevent the structure — also known as the Pearis-Johnston House — but Judge William Sadler later ruled the home’s owner had the right to have the home demolished if a settlement with the historical society could not be met through mediation.
