Second trial underway for Mercer County man facing multiple counts of sexual abuse involving children

PRINCETON — A Mercer County Circuit Court jury heard opening statements today in the second trial of a man facing multiple counts of first-degree sexual assault and 50 counts of posession of child pornography charges.

The first trial of John Spaulding, 41, of Montcalm, ended in a mistrial after a juror became ill. Chief Assistant Prosecuting Attorney George Sitler said the state would show how Spaulding arranged to meet with a 3-year-old girl for a sexual encounter.

Spaulding’s attorney, Harold Wolfe, told the jury he would show how the images on Spaudling’s computer were placed there by Kimberly Cox, who previously pleaded guilty to sexual assault and sexual abuse by a parent or custodian charges.

Spaulding was indicted on six counts of sexual assault the first degree, attempt to commit a felony, and 50 charges of possession of material depicting minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct.
