Three Mercer County volunteer fire department respond to blaze

SPANISHBURG — Three Mercer County volunteer fire departments were called Sunday night to a report of a structure fire at a single-wide manufactured home on Rich Creek Road.

“The trailer was occupied and sustained some damage where the fire was and smoke damage in the rest of the trailer,” Chief Steven Sommers of the Matoaka Volunteer Fire Department said. Matoaka along with the East River and Bluestone Valley volunteer fire departments responded to the blaze that was reported at about 7:35 p.m.

“We were able to stop the fire from spreading to an outbuilding,” Sommers said. He added that at 8:35, the departments were “mopping up” at the fire scene. Firefighters drafted water from a nearby stream to battle the blaze.
