A local man was arraigned Thursday morning after being charged with animal abuse.
The McDowell County Sheriff’s Department received a complaint Tuesday about three dead animals at an Iaeger residence.
Joshua Brett Maxwell, 30, of Iaeger, has been charged with three counts of cruelty to animals causing death resulting in a felony after the sheriff’s department responded to the residence and found three dogs dead, one female dog and her two pups, according to a press release from the sheriff’s department.
Deputy Anthony Epperson, who investigated the incident, discovered a mother dog and puppies that had been starved to death. The animals “looked to have been dead for a few days,” the release stated.
Photographs Epperson took at the scene show the mother dog tied up in front of a doghouse with one puppy in the dog house and another one laying in the yard. All of the dogs were dead.
Epperson noted that there were no water or food bowls within reach of the dogs and that the female dog was tangled up on a short leash.
Maxwell is currently in jail on unrelated charges and was arraigned before Magistrate Steve Cox who set a bond at $15,000.
