1 hospitalized after 3-vehicle wreck in Bluewell

BLUEWELL — One person was transported to a local hospital Wednesday after a three-car crash closed U.S. Route 52 for more than half an hour.

The crash occurred at approximately 11 a.m. in front of Lynn’s Drive Inn when two cars in the middle turn lane were hit by a red Dodge traveling southbound, said Deputy W.E. Rose of the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department.

Firefighters and EMS personnel worked to extricate the Dodge’s driver, Maria Hicks, 40, of Bluefield, from her vehicle while traffic was stopped in both lanes. She was alone in her car, Rose said.

Hicks was transported to Bluefield Regional Medical Center. Her condition was not immediately available Wednesday. The drivers of the other two cars, a Honda Accord and a four-door Chrysler, were also alone in their vehicles. No other injuries were reported, Rose said.

Both lanes of traffic were closed until 11:38 p.m. The Bluewell and Montcalm Volunteer Fire Departments and the Bluefield Rescue Squad were also dispatched.

Route 52 reopened at approximately 11:38 a.m. after the wreckage had been cleared from the scene.
