PRINCETON — One person is dead following a single-vehicle accident in Mercer County.

The single occupant of a gray Honda Civic died following a Wednesday afternoon crash at the intersection of Gardner Road and Brickyard Road outside Princeton, according to Cpl. A.P. Christian with the West Virginia State Police Princeton detachment. The collision was first reported at 2:51 p.m.

“From what we can tell, the car careened to the right, and traveled off the road for 50 to 60 yards,” Christian said. “It then hit a large rock, causing the vehicle to flip.”

Christian said the preliminary investigation indicates the driver was killed “as a result of damage to the vehicle.”

The driver is not being identified until next of kin can be notified, Christian said.

Dispatchers with Mercer County 911 said traffic became backed up in the area while police worked to clear the scene and because many vehicles were traveling in the area as part of a detour set up due to a rock slide on Interstate 77.

The Princeton Rescue Squad, East River Volunteer Fire Department, Bluestone Valley Volunteer Fire Department and Mercer County Sheriff’s Department also responded to the crash.
