The Bluefield Fire Department got a “good stop” on a structure fire on Union Street early Sunday morning, but the residence was 35-40 percent involved when firefighters were alerted to the fire.
“They got there quick and put a good stop on the fire, but the home is uninhabitable,” Captain Stan McKenzie said. McKenzie was due to work day shift on Sunday, but came out early to help battle the blaze. “They had it under control when I arrived,” he said.
The department received the call at 5:37 a.m. for the residence located at 404 Union St. McKenzie said that the fire appeared to have started in one of the upstairs bedrooms.
“The homeowners were away on vacation,” McKenzie said. He did not release the name of the homeowners, but noted that the home is now uninhabitable. A neighbor who was at the scene early Sunday said that the family had been away on a cruise, but that information could not be confirmed.
“We contacted the State Fire Marshal’s office to investigate the fire,” McKenzie said.
He said that there were no injuries to any of the firefighters who responded to the blaze.
