Alleged sexual assault reported on CU campus

ATHENS — Concord University students, staff and faculty were alerted this week after an alleged sexual assault was reported on campus.

“We’ve got an alleged sexual assault that was reported to have occurred Monday evening,” Marshall Campbell, director of human resources and legal counsel for Concord University said.

A female student came forward Tuesday about the incident, Campbell said. The alleged assault occurred outdoors in a campus parking lot. Campbell declined to release addition details because an investigation by the Concord University Police Department and the Athens Police Department was ongoing.

Campbell provided the Bluefield Daily Telegraph on Wednesday with a statement that was issued Tuesday evening by the campus Emergency Alert System. The perpetrator was described as a white male approximately six feet tall. Additional precautions were also announced.

“Housing and Campus Safety staff will provide safety escorts, when requested,” the alert stated. “Campus police will be providing extra patrols throughout the area. The Office of the President along with the CU Police continues to work together to provide a safe environment for our campus and community. CUPD reminds and urges all campus community members to use extra caution. CUPD also reminds students to always be aware of their surroundings and carry a cell phone at all times.”

The alert included safety tips for preventing sexual assaults and other advice.

“What we do is ask students, faculty and staff to be careful on how they handle themselves on campus,” Campbell said. “That is something we talk about, especially to students, all the time – have a buddy, have a cellphone, don’t go off to the more remote parts of campus, things like that.”

Concord University students who want an escort can call 304-384-5132, according to the alert. Students who wish to subscribe to the Emergency Alert System can do so at
