Appeal to stop death of pit bull denied

BLUEFIELD —  A Mercer County Circuit Court judge had denied an appeal to stop a Bluefield municipal court order to destroy a pit bull that bit a person.

On March 6, city of Bluefield Animal Control Officer Randall Thompson responded to Estella Mae Robinson’s home at 1025 Wayne St. in Bluefield to answer a complaint about a dog running at large and another dog having inadequate shelter. Thompson was bitten on both hands by Robinson’s pit bull while answering the call.

In April, Robinson pleaded guilty in the municipal court of Bluefield to owning, keeping and/or harboring a dangerous animal in violation of city code. The court ordered that the pit bull be destroyed.

On May 20, Robinson filed an appeal in Mercer County Circuit Court. Judge William Sadler issued a ruling Wednesday stating that the municipal court has the power to enforce the ordinance. The appeal to keep the dog from being destroyed was denied.
