Iaeger school construction to resume

IAEGER — Construction should begin once again in the next few weeks on the new Iaeger Elementary School, according to school officials.

After a break in construction, Swope Construction Company of Bluefield has been selected as the apparent low bidder for the project.

“We are having a meeting next week and I hope construction will begin in February or March depending on weather,” McDowell County School Superintendent Nelson Spencer said.

Site work began in December 2012 on the new Iaeger Elementary School, but the construction was put on hold after there was a question about a permit.

The existing Iaeger Elementary School was constructed in 1957, and is one of the oldest schools McDowell County.

The school was closed earlier this year after a mudslide during the weekend of Dec. 7 and 8 behind the existing Iaeger Elementary School. Part of the school’s parking lot that was damaged by the slide collapsed into the Tug River.

The new elementary school is the last project to be funded as part of a decade-old flood-proofing agreement in McDowell County that was launched in conjunction with the state Board of Education, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the state School Building Authority.

Nelson said the projected timeline for construction is 14 months.
