Tazewell resident charged with abuse, neglect of horses

TAZEWELL, Va. — A Tazewell resident has been charged after a complaint was filed about malnourished horses.

Sandra Simpson, age unavailable, of North Tazewell, has been charged with failure to take care of animals and abuse/neglect after a complaint to animal control was filed, Tazewell County Sheriff Brian Hieatt said.

Hieatt said the sheriff’s office has launched an active investigation after two horses had to be euthanized Tuesday and Wednesday because of being malnourished.

“We had a complaint on Tuesday and when we went to check, one horse was in extremely bad shape. Our vet does everything she can with abused animals and for her to recommend euthanization, these animals were in bad shape,” Hieatt said.

Animal control returned Wednesday to check on the horses and found another horse in need of critical care. The vet also euthanized this horse also, Hieatt said.

Hieatt was unsure of the number of horses that Simpson owns but said hay and supplies had been taken to make sure the other horses were taken care of for the night.

Hieatt said the case is still under investigation.

Hieatt said citizens are encouraged to report any cases of animal neglect they may witness. Please call the sheriff’s office at 276-988-5966
