Associated Press

WELCH — West Virginia State Police troopers have captured the inmate who escaped from the Steven’s Correctional Facility.

Lanny Markland, a trustee at the facility, walked off the property Thursday. Troopers with the State Police Welch detachment captured Markland this morning around 9:30 a.m., Sgt. C.F. Kane, detachment commander, said.

Markland was walking down U.S. Route 52 around the Upland area of McDowell when he was captured.

Authorities believe that Markland had broken into a railyard and stolen a change of clothes, Cpl. B.J. Garretson Welch detachment said.

Markland’s escape triggered a county-wide manhunt Thursday, with Kane, Sgt. A.P. Christian, Cpl. B.J. Garretson, Trooper J.R. Coburn and Trooper C.A. Dunn participating in the search. McDowell County Sheriff’s deputies and officers with the Welch Police Department were also involved in the search for Markland.
