N.C. woman indicted on drug charge

BLUEFIELD — A North Carolina woman has been indicted on a drug charge out of Mercer County, alleging that she distributed pain pills illegally earlier this year.

Rachelle Bryant, 24, of Winston-Salem, N.C., was arrested Thursday on federal charges of “distributing a quantity of hydromorphone” at or near Bluefield on May 6, according to the three-count indictment returned by a federal grand jury that met in Beckley on Oct. 1.

The indictment remained under seal until Bryant was in custody. A co-defendant in the indictment was not in custody on Friday. Bryant and the un-named co-defendant are both charged together in a conspiracy count alleging that on May 7, Bryant and her co-defendant, “aided and abetted by each other, knowingly and intentionally distributed a quantity of hydromorphone.”

The co-defendant is named alone in count 2 of the indictment.

Bryant had her initial appearance on Thursday before U.S. Magistrate Judge R. Clarke VanDervort who scheduled her arraignment and detention hearing for 10 a.m. on Oct. 8, at U.S. District Court in Beckley.

Assistant U.S. Attorney John L. File represented the government before the grand jury.
