Crowds fill armory for Women’s Expo

BRUSHFORK — Today women and their families have another opportunity to visit the sights, sounds and new ideas at the 11th Annual Women’s Expo in the Brushfork Armory.

The expo’s doors are open today from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Plenty of people were waiting at the door Friday morning for the expo’s first day. Before noon, hundreds of visitors were roaming the aisles and sampling the many services and products showcased by the expo’s 180 vendors. Automobiles, pet services, wines, health care services, clothing, physical fitness, crafts, banking, food and retirement services are among the offerings this year.

At the Prerogative magazine and Bluefield Daily Telegraph booth, visitors can become cover models by getting their faces superimposed on a Prerogative cover. In exchange for the cover art, visitors are asked for a $5 donation to the American Cancer Society.

“It’s great to see such a wonderful turnout of women taking advantage of all the vendors and services in our area,” Publisher Darryl Hudson said.

Businesses and other entities are displaying the goods and services they offer to the community. In the armory’s upper gallery, Appalachian Teen Challenge was helping the public learn more about its services for troubled youth and selling jewelry as a fundraiser for its ministry.

“The girls make jewelry and we sell it as a fundraiser,” said Tabitha Masters, development coordinator for Teen Challenge. “It’s a good opportunity to spread the word about Teen Challenge and let them know what we’re doing.”

Some visitors come to the expo every year. For others, it was a new experience.

“It’s my first time here,” said Carlotta Cole of Speedway. “It’s great. I like all the different crafts and the stuff you don’t see anywhere else.”

Repeat visitors said they see something new every year.

“I think it’s a great thing,” said Cindy Gilley of Athens. “I enjoy coming. I’ve been coming here the last five years.”

Gilley said her mother usually accompanies her, but this year, she could not go to the expo.

“But I brought new recruits who have never been here before,” Gilley added.

Back at the Daily Telegraph booth, Amy Atwood of Princeton and her 9-month-old daughter Isabella were becoming cover models.

“She’s been amazed by all the stuff, all the Christmas lights and balloons,” Atwood said.
