Commission meeting to discuss moving trick-or-treat back to Oct. 31

PRINCETON — The Mercer County Commission will call a special meeting Thursday to move Halloween trick-or-treat back from Tuesday, Oct. 30 to Wednesday, Oct. 31.

County commissioners will convene the special meeting at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Mercer County Courthouse, said County Coordinator Vicky Reed.

The county commission had moved the date up from Oct. 31 to Oct. 30 so trick-or-treat would not conflict with Wednesday night church services, said Commissioner Jay Mills.

“One time before, it came on a Sunday,” Mills recalled of a previous Halloween. “We had several calls about changing it. That was the only reason — it was church time for a lot of people.”

The commission had received calls from people complaining about this year’s change in Halloween’s date.

“Evidently, a lot of people don’t like it, and we have to do what the people want,” Mills said. “We can change it easily.”

Several communities chose to keep their trick-or-treat on the traditional Halloween date of Oct. 31. The city of Princeton moved its trick-or-treat date to Oct. 30.

Mayor Pat Wilson said Monday that the city council would have to meet and decide whether to keep the Oct. 30 date.

“Well, we will just have to get together with everybody and see what they want to do,” Wilson said of the council members.
