Volunteers prepare to shop for Little Jimmie; campaign still short of goal

BLUEFIELD — An anonymous donation Tuesday of $1,000 helped to push the Community Christmas Tree closer toward its goal.

A team of shopping volunteers, who will begin purchasing hundreds of toys over the next few days, also began picking up the vintage red bags Tuesday at the Daily Telegraph offices that have come to symbolize the annual Little Jimmie party.

Sponsored by the Bluefield Daily Telegraph, the Community Christmas Tree — also known as the Little Jimmie campaign — provides toys, treats, a book, toboggan, a pair of gloves and other goodies to hundreds of local children in need each year.

Contributions Tuesday of $1,780 helped to bring this year’s total to date to $20,523. The campaign is now $9,477 short of its $30,000 goal.

Organizers expect to serve around 825 children at this year’s party on Saturday, Dec. 21, from noon to 1:30 p.m., at the city auditorium on Stadium Drive in Bluefield. More than 775 children had been registered as of Tuesday for this year’s party. The Bluefield Daily Telegraph will continue to take last-minute referrals of children from other charities and health and human service agencies. It is anticipated that another 50 children or more will be registered for the program in the coming days.

Help is still needed to meet this year’s campaign goal.

Those who would like to contribute to the Community Christmas Tree program can mail donations to: Bluefield Daily Telegraph, c/o Community Christmas Tree, P.O. Box 1599, Bluefield, WV, 24701; or drop them off at the Daily Telegraph office. Checks should be made payable to the Community Christmas Tree Fund.
