Police say a woman fatally stabbed her boyfriend following an apparent domestic dispute in McDowell County.
Shona Riffe, 42, of Welch, is charged with second-degree murder in connection with the stabbing death of Billy Haney Jr., 34, of Welch, according to Welch Police Chief E.A. Muncy. Riffe was being held Monday on a $500,000 bond awaiting transfer to the Southwestern Regional Jail in Logan.
Officers with the Welch Police Department responded to a report of a domestic argument Saturday night at a residence on Central Avenue in the city limits of Welch. When the officers arrived on scene, they found Haney deceased at the residence.
Muncy said Riffe was arrested and charged Sunday night with second-degree murder in connection with Haney’s death.
Both Haney and Riffe resided at the residence, and “were boyfriend and girlfriend,” according to Muncy.
“It was their residence,” Muncy said. “They both lived there — boyfriend and girlfriend. A domestic argument led to the call.”
Muncy said Haney died as a result of stab wounds.
“Haney was deceased when officers arrived on scene,” Muncy said. “I can’t go into too much. She (Riffe) was arrested that night on some misdemeanor charges, and the next day she was arrested on second-degree murder.”
Riffe was arraigned Sunday before Magistrate Danny Mitchell, who set bond at $500,000. She was being held at the county’s holding facility Monday awaiting transfer to the regional jail system.
Muncy said the investigation is continuing.
The stabbing is being investigated by Muncy, Patrolman First Class S.P. McKinney, Patrolman A.D. Perry and Patrolman W. Rutherford. Muncy said troopers with the West Virginia State Police Welch Detachment also assisted with the investigation.
