Wreck results in ‘serious’ injury

One air-lifted following pickup truck, motorcycle collision

BRUSHFORK — A Mercer County man was air-lifted from Bluefield Regional Medical Center to a Roanoke, Va., hospital in serious condition following a motorcycle and pickup truck collision on U.S. Route 52, at about 1:35 p.m., Sunday afternoon.

A 31-year-old Mercer County man was riding his 2005 Kawasaki motorcycle southbound on Route 52 when a collision occurred with a 2011 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck operated by a 57-year-old Mercer County female driver. There was also a male passenger in the pickup truck.

“Both vehicles were traveling southbound,” Sgt. S.J. Cary of the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department said. “The male riding the motorcycle was transported by the Bluefield Rescue Squad to BRMC and they are flying him out to a Roanoke hospital right now,” Cary said at about 3:30 p.m. “I’m not sure about the medical term for his status, but he is in serious condition,” he said.

The accident occurred about 100 feet south of the entrance to 20/20 Enterprises. Traffic was backed up in both directions. “The female driver of the pickup truck was transported to BRMC with minor injuries,” Cary said.

Cary said that he gathered statements from witnesses at the scene, but said he still did not have a clear understanding of how the accident occurred. “It’s undetermined at this time,” Cary said.

Cary did not release the names or the addresses of the drivers involved in the wreck pending completion of his investigation.
