WYTHEVILLE, Va. —
Crews working to clean away a train derailment that occurred Monday in Wytheville have advised that Grayson Road, which was open to the public Tuesday evening, has been closed again while they start the process of removing the Norfolk Southern train wreckage.
Traffic between Speedwell and Wytheville is being diverted to Winding Road / Old Stage Road, according to Jeremy Farley, public information officer for Wythe County.
Local officials say the closure will last throughout much of the day.
The train consisted of 33 rail cars of which 14 derailed near the railroad line’s intersection with the Grayson Turnpike. Nine of the cars that derailed were carrying automobiles. Two double-stack container cars were also on the ground as a result of the derailment.
