WYTHEVILLE, Va. — Norfolk Southern Railroad crews were in route Monday evening to Wytheville,Va. after a train derailment involving approximately 11 cars was reported near Route 21.

Robin Chapman, a spokesman for Norfolk Southern Railroad, told the Bluefield Daily Telegraph that the derailment happened approximately 6:30 p.m.

“This is an eastbound intermodal train going from Louisville, Ky. to Norfolk, Va., and it consisted of 33 rail cars and three locomotives,” Chapman said.

Nine of the cars that derailed were carrying automobiles. Two double-stack container cars were also on the ground, he said.

“The latest I have is that there is no hazmat (hazardous materials) involved,” Chapman added. No injuries have been reported.
