Deputies arrest McDowell man following pursuit

IAEGER — A McDowell County man, who smelled of alcohol when he was approached by McDowell County sheriff’s deputies conducting a traffic stop Thursday night, attempted to flee from the stop, struck a fence and a deputy’s cruiser during a pursuit before he was apprehended.

Bobby Ray Roberts, 46, of Avondale, fled from Deputies R.L. Jones and R.R. Freeman after they stopped him at 8:09 p.m., Thursday evening in the Garland area near Iaeger, according to a press release from Sgt. James E. Muncy Jr., of the McDowell County Sheriff’s Department.

“Once the deputies asked Roberts for his ID, he fled the scene,” according to the press release. The deputies initiated a pursuit and chased Roberts into Betsy Branch where he struck a fence and another vehicle. As he attempted to continue his flight, Roberts ran into one of the deputies’ vehicles. Deputies arrested Roberts at the crash scene and brought him back to Welch where he was arraigned early Friday morning before McDowell County Magistrate Steve Cox.

Roberts was charged with one count each of DUI, fleeing while DUI, reckless driving, unlawful possession, no operator’s license, operating defective equipment, resisting arrest, assault on a government representative, battery on a government representative, assault and battery, according to a magistrate court spokesperson.

Cox set Roberts’ bond at $25,000. The defendant made bond, was released and is awaiting trial on the charges.
