1 cuffed in ambulance theft

NORTHFORK — A North Carolina man, who stole an ambulance in McDowell County and operated the vehicle while intoxicated, is facing a number of charges, police said Monday.

Steven Allen Goins, 33, of East Bend, N.C., is charged with grand larceny, attempt to commit a felony, DUI and a misdemeanor destruction of property charge, Sheriff Martin B. West said.

The charges stem from an incident that began at 5:15 a.m. Sunday after the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office received a complaint of an assault in the Northfork area. West said Deputy K. Wright with the sheriff’s office responded to the call. Upon investigating the initial complaint, West said Wright learned that Goins had tried to steal a dirt bike, but was spotted by the owner of the dirt bike.

West said Goins then dropped the dirt bike after being seen by the owner of the bike and fled the scene. West said Goins then traveled to downtown Northfork and stole a ambulance belonging to Widners Ambulance Service in Northfork.

Police believe the man drove the ambulance intoxicated from Northfork to neighboring Keystone, said Sgt. James E. Muncy Jr., also with the sheriff’s office.

At that point, West said the investigating deputy was able to locate Goins and the ambulance in the Keystone area of McDowell County.

West said while speaking to Goins Wright found that he had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage coming from his person. At that point, West said the deputy arrested Goins.

The man was arraigned before Magistrate Daniel Mitchell and bond was set at $20,000. He remains incarcerated at the Southwestern Regional Jail in lieu of bond.
