Two die on train trestle

CHILHOWIE, Va. — An adult male and a female child died Sunday afternoon as a result of being struck by a westbound Norfolk Southern freight train, according to an NS spokesman.

“Shortly after 2 p.m. (on Sunday), a westbound freight train encountered a man and two children — a girl and a boy — on a railroad trestle hear Chilhowie, Va.,” Robin Chapman, NS spokesman said in response to an email request seeking comment.

“The train crew engaged emergency brakes and sounded the horn,” Chapman continued. “The boy dropped down between the rails, while the man and the girl stood on the edge of the trestle and were struck and killed.

“The boy was missing for several hours and was later located at his grandfather’s house, apparently unharmed, but was taken to Johnson Memorial Hospital for observation,” Chapman stated.

He said that he does not have the identities of either of the two victims or the boy who survived.

“Norfolk Southern is cooperating with local law enforcement in (the) investigation,” Chapman continued. “The track speed at that location is 45 mph.”

No other details were available late Sunday evening.
