Three injured in Airport Road crash

BRUSHFORK — First responders were dispatched both in the morning and the late afternoon Wednesday to crashes at an intersection on Airport Road.

The first crash was reported at approximately 9:40 a.m. after two vehicles collided at the intersection of Airport Road and Stoney Ridge Road. A gray Ford van attempting to cross from Stoney Ridge Road to Perdue Hollow Road was struck on the rear driver’s side by a Chevrolet pickup truck, said Deputy J.S. Bish of the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department.

The truck’s driver and the driver and passenger of the van were taken to Bluefield Regional Medical Center. Bish said the driver of the truck was cited for driving with a suspended license, and the van’s driver was cited for failure to yield the right of way.

Units of the Bluewell Volunteer Fire Department and the Bluefield Rescue Squad were also dispatched to the scene. Airport Road was closed until the wreck was cleared.

Onlookers who live along Airport Road said Wednesday’s crashes were not the first ones they had seen at that particular intersection.

“It’s a bad intersection,” said one resident who declined to give her name after the morning crash. “This isn’t the first one. It’s a bad intersection.”

“Oh, yea,” Ethel Davis, 61, agreed. “I live up the road and I heard the bang all the way up to my house.”

Motorists often speed when they travel on Airport Road, she added.

“They don’t slow down. People coming down this road fly,” Davis said.

A second crash occurred at almost the same spot at approximately 5:19 p.m. Wednesday. A Ford Expedition and a Chevrolet Astro van collided, but no injuries were reported, said Deputy M.S. Horn of the Mercer County Sheriff’s Department. Deputy T.S. Rose also worked at the scene. The Bluewell Volunteer Fire Department was also dispatched.
