Suspects injured in holding cell while awaiting court appearances

PRINCETON — A Bluefield man facing charges in the death of his infant son missed his preliminary hearing Monday afternoon after suffering injuries in a holding cell.

Cassidy Byrd, 23, of Bluefield, was scheduled for a preliminary hearing before Mercer County Magistrate Mike Flanigan, said Assistant Prosecuting Attorney Janet Williamson. Byrd is charged with the death of a child by a parent, custodian or guardian by abuse.

Byrd suffered injuries in a holding cell and was taken to Princeton Community Hospital, Williamson said.

In an earlier report, Detective K.L. Adams of the Bluefield Police Department, said the state medical examiner ruled that the child died as a result of being struck to the head. The infant also had a busted lip and bruising to his body.

James “Jim” Irvin, 57, of Bluefield, indicted on multiple counts of sexual assault first-degree, sexual abuse first-degree and sexual abuse by a parent or guardian, also was injured in a holding cell Monday and was transported to Princeton Community Hospital, Williamson said. Irvin was at the courthouse for a docket day appearance.

Irvin, a self-proclaimed “warlock,” allegedly used a promise of magical spells to lure children into committing sexual acts with him, according to earlier reports.

Lights in the southern end of the tunnel illuminate an odd design beside the catwalk near the left lane of the northbound tube of the East River Mountain Tunnel that transports I-77 from Virginia into West Virginia. Two firefighters who made the initial assault through the total darkness of the soot and smoke-filled tunnel left those marks as they slid their arms along the catwalk wall on their journey back to the light.
