Several Tazewell County races to be determined by write-in votes

TAZEWELL, Va. — Several town council races in Tazewell County will have to be determined by write-in votes this fall due to a lack of candidates.

The deadline to file for town council races in the towns of Bluefield, Va., Tazewell, Pocahontas, Cedar Bluff and Richlands has passed and several slots remain empty. And only one race among the five towns — a town council seat in Bluefield, Va., — will be contested, according to the final candidate slate released Friday by the office of Tazewell County Registrar Brian Earls.

In the town of Bluefield, Va., four candidates are vying for three council seats. The Bluefield, Va., contest is the only contested race that will be on the Nov. 4 ballot. The candidates include incumbents Stephen M. Danko, James H. “Jimmy” Jones, R. Lee Riffe and challenger Ron D. Holt II.

In the town of Tazewell, incumbent Mayor A. Donald Buchanan Jr., is running unopposed for re-election. In the town council race, three incumbents are running unopposed for three council seats. They are Chris R. Brown, Terry W. Mullins and Jack T. Murray Sr.

In the town of Pocahontas, four council seats are up for grabs Nov. 4, but only two candidates will be on the ballot. They are incumbents Michael H. Gibson and Jerry C. Gravely. The remaining two council seats will be filled by write-in votes.

Also in Pocahontas, incumbent Mayor Benjamin A. Gibson is running unopposed for re-election.

In the town of Cedar Bluff, two candidates have filed for three council seats. They are incumbents K.M. “Kenny” Shepard and Richard E. “Rick” Widener. The third council seat will have to be filled by a write-in candidate.

In the town of Richlands, incumbent Mayor Jannis R. “Jan” White is running unopposed for re-election to the mayoral post.
