Bluefield’s new CASE housing nearly done

BLUEFIELD — Construction on the new housing development on Highland Avenue is coming to a close as residents are anticipating moving in to the new units within the next month.

CASE WV Executive Director Oretta Hubbard said the inside of the houses are complete.

“Right now contractors are trying to finish up working on the outside of the houses, pouring sidewalks, finishing the parking lot, lighting, fencing and landscaping. It seems like a lot but it is just the loose ends that need to be tied up before people can move in, ” Hubbard said.

The project contains a total of eight new units on the site. Two of these newly constructed units will be single-family houses and six of them will be rental properties.

Hubbard said there is already a waiting list for the houses.

“We have about 30 applications so far and we are still sorting through those. There is a selection criteria that we are required to go by,” Hubbard said. “We were hoping people were going to be able to move in around the first of June but it looks like we will be shooting for the middle of June, so we can finish up all the odds and ends.”

Hubbard said the purpose of the housing is help re-create neighborhoods.

“We want to make an effort to get back to the neighborhood settings where people feel safe and children can ride their bikes and play on the sidewalks. The housing is safe and affordable and we are looking forward to providing these new properties to enhance the city of Bluefield,” Hubbard said.
