Bluefield Regional CEO resigns

BLUEFIELD — The chief executive officer of Bluefield Regional Medical Center has resigned, officials said Tuesday.

Bill Hawley, had served as CEO at BRMC since 2010, hospital spokesman Becky Ritter said.

“As we continue to search to identify a candidate to fill the role of CEO, current Chief Operating Officer Michael Makosky will serve as interim CEO,” Ritter said.

Ritter said Makosky was appointed as chief operating officer of BRMC in September 2013.

Ritter, who issued a prepared statement to the Daily Telegraph regarding the resignation, didn’t give a reason why Hawley decided to leave the position. Ritter said the hospital had no further comments about the matter at this time.

Hawley began work at BRMC on Oct. 1, 2010 — the same day that the sale of BRMC to a subsidiary of Community Health Systems Inc. was completed. Before the sale, the hospital operated through a local community board of directors.

Hawley, a native of Huntington, served as the first CEO of BRMC under the ownership of Community Health Systems, Inc.

In an earlier interview with the Daily Telegraph, Hawley said he was working to address physician recruitment issues at BRMC, as well as capital investments to improve facilities, technology, medical equipment and services.

It wasn’t clear Tuesday how long the process would take for the hospital to find a new CEO.
