Winter storm warning issued for the region — accumulating snowfall expected Wednesday

Bluefield Daily Telegraph

BLUEFIELD —  Holiday travelers could be in for a rough ride Wednesday.

The National Weather Service in Blacksburg, Va., has issued a winter storm warning for Mercer, Tazewell, Bland, Giles, Monroe, Wythe and Summers counties. The winter storm warning is in effect for late tonight through Wednesday night.

Forecasters say snow accumulatations of 3 to 6 inches are possible, including higher amounts on ridges and western slopes. The timing of the storm could create major holiday travel problems — as thousands of motorists are expected to be on the road Wednesday heading home for Thanksgiving when the snow falls.

Forecasters say snow drifts also could be a problem early Wednesday morning when the wind begins to pick up.
