Shelter drive still in need of donations

BLUEFIELD — Gifts of dog and cat food, kitty litter, pet toys, cleaning supplies and bedding have been donated to this year’s Prerogative-Bluefield Daily Telegraph shelter drive, but much more is needed to match the donations raised last year.

Friday is the final day for the 2013 shelter drive, said Editor Samantha Perry. Donations will be accepted until 5 p.m. at the Bluefield Daily Telegraph. Contributions have been arriving all week, but the amount is falling short of what was collected in 2012.

The Mercer County Animal Shelter, the McDowell County Humane Society Animal Shelter, Pet Haven at Falls Mills, Va., the Tazewell County Animal Shelter, and the Save a Pet Food Bank in Bluefield all benefit from the shelter drive. Contributions presented by local animal lovers help the shelters during the months of January, February and March when donations are not plentiful.
