BLUEFIELD, Va. — Marc Meachum, president and chief executive officer of the Greater Bluefield Chamber of Commerce reported that the chamber’s financials are doing “significantly well” because the “Coal Show revenues are coming in very strongly.”

Meachum was substituting for John Mahood, longtime Bluefield chamber treasurer, at the chamber’s monthly board of directors meeting that was held Thursday in the Coppinger Room at Bowen Field. Since it was resurrected in 1976, the Bluefield Coal Show has made a positive impact on the chamber’s finances. The show remains one of the biggest volunteer-operated shows of its kind.

“Coal Show time again and we need your help,” Charlie Peters, Bluefield Coal Show general chairman, said. This year’s Coal Show will be from Sept. 11-13. “We need all of the help we can get.”

Peters said that Bill Reid, editor/publisher of Coal News is working to secure a speaker for the Media Appreciation Breakfast that serves as the kickoff to the biennial show. Peters added that several seminar speakers have already committed to participate.

“We’re going to try parking at Mitchell Stadium this year,” Peters said. “We will be looking to have some parking at the armory for exhibitors and volunteers working the show. We have 240 exhibitors coming to the show this year with exhibitors from New Jersey, Indiana, Washington state, Florida, Illinois, Alabama, Australia, Brazil and from West Virginia and all the surrounding states.”

Peters said that the Coal Show Committee will meet in August to finalize plans for the Coal Show.
